Pretty Nice Jul 18, 2010 I got my 1 TB for $120 from a local store, best buy, I think.
Works great. I didn't use any built in software. I just use it as a portable device. Extra storage.
No problems whatsoever!!! Jul 16, 2010 Bought this when it came out for like $120 a few years ago. Thing has been dropped a few times and still lives. I've taken it to do some DJing at a friends house who has Torq (quite a few times) and no problems. Thing is packed with only 100mb of memory left and no problems.
One note, I wasn't sure about the software that came with so I deleted it off the drive, gave me no problems. Plug & play! (FYI, i'm running XP, P4 3Ghz with 2 gigs of ram and an ATI 1 gig 4600 vid card)
I would totally consider buying another (bigger) Western drive! Only bad thing is trying to find a place to plug in for power as it is not usb powered.
Had it for 2 years now, travelled the world with it and dropped it many times...still going strong May 19, 2010 This is not my first WD external drive and it won't be my last. I have had several and they all perform perfectly. This particular drive traveled the world with me; well over 130K sky miles internationally and I have not had any issues with it. It is almost to capacity and no boot issues ever. I have full on dropped it on several occasions, such that I had to re-seat the cover and there is now a tiny bit of the plastic cover rattling around inside and still no issues. It boots up every day without ever giving me any issues; formatted FAT32 and I have never had to reformat and I have never lost data. I, of course, have redundant backups of my data but for durability and ease of use with most systems this a solid drive.
Bit of tick noise and then a short high pitched whirl noise when the disk is first being read. It's normal, as other brands also do this, and doesn't continue once it's moving there is just a hum noise. I won't lie it's not whisper quiet but it's never given me any issues. Although, I am sure there are quieter drives out there.
Due to size and nature of the drive it needs an external power source. If you're looking for one that plugs and plays on 2.0 USB only try the WD Passport drives they need no external power supply and work great.
Note: I have had issues with aftermarket USB cables that are "portable." By portable I mean the ones that are under tension and you pull on both ends and it coils itself around a spring mechanism making it all neat and tidy. For some reason my WD drives do not like to work with them, even though these are properly rated. The drives are recognized by Vista or XP but when you try to access the data Windows asks you to reformat the drives. I would try a non-coil cable first before taking such drastic steps.
I am so impressed with WD that I purchased their VelociRaptor 10K RPM drives for my tower. They run in RAID 0 and I have never had problems with them either. I just purchased the WD 1TB Essential, hopefully that will prove just as reliable...it does seem a bit quieter.
Epic Fail Mar 10, 2010 I've had this hard drive for barely 1 year. It's my secondary backup. 95% of the time it isn't even on. Once a week I plug it in and backup my primary backup. So it only gets used 4-6 hours per week at most. And it's dead already. The power light comes on but all I hear is a faint high pitched beep and the drive itself does not spin up. It worked fine for the time that it did run. But if it's only going to last 1 year of minimal usage it is definitely not worth buying.

One possible simple repair for WD My Books not powering on Mar 04, 2010 My out-of-warranty WD My Book Essential II USB 2.0 drive (MDL: WD5000H1U-00) stopped powering on recently, and after testing the wall wart output and trying a different USB cable & computer, I opened the enclosure and tried the bare drive in another enclosure, and it worked fine.
So I started testing the I/O / power supply PCB (I am an electrical engineer). Mine says FIREFLY 1U/1B in the upper right on the component side. With the 12V power attached, there was no voltage appearing across the 1000uF cap (C55), so I assumed the 12V to 5V DC-DC (switching) converter circuit was not working. Nothing looks scorched, swollen, or out of the ordinary physically. Then I happened to test the voltage at the output of the inductor (L19) and I was getting 4.X volts! I looked more carefully, and apparently the surface-mount inductor solder joint had opened! If the inductor is not connected at one end to the output capacitor, things aren't going to work!! So I resoldered it down, and voila, it worked perfectly again.
I think this could be the source of many complaints people have about WD My Book drives failing in high-use applications. The more time the drive is powered on, the more vibration the surface-mount inductor will experience (mostly from the drive mechanism but also from its self-induced switching vibration), and the more likely the solder joint will fail. If you know your bare drive is good, look carefully at the FIREFLY 1U/1B board and test for continuity between both ends of the inductor and the + terminal of the 1000uF output cap (C55)! Or, better yet, check for continuity between pin 8 (SW) of U4 (the NX2114 controller chip) and the + terminal of the output cap. I hope this saves somebody from losing data or throwing away a perfectly good hard drive!
